You don't have to turn in any amount...But think about it like this if you lost money wouldn't you want to have someone turn it in so you could get it back...I do know taking or destroying anything over $500 is considered a Felony.....

I would think a random bill of any denomination, keep for yourself. If you were to find a strap of money or a bag of it, take it to whatever bank or business name is stamped onto it...if there is no name contact the police.

I'm pretty sure that in most places you have a legal obligation to turn it in. I probably wouldn't unless it appeared to be from a bank or had some identifying characteristics (sequential serial numbers or identifiable banding.)
