Because it's politically incorrect to cause pain or suffering. It's okay for a person to go out and brutally murder people, but it is not okay for us to execute them in any way that would cause any discomfort. Our political correctness will be the destruction of this country.

Capital punishment ought to be used for the worst, most sociopathic murderers among us. But there is no reason why we ought to recreate the crime for the criminal. The Constitution prohibits cruel and unusual punishment. The punishment ought to fit the crime. That does not mean that we ought to set up medieval torture chambers. Kill the sociopaths quickly, by lethal injection or whatever means necessary, and be done with them.

Because we do not use the worst of society to set our standards of behavior. Just because someone else is cruel is no excuse for us to be.

Dead people don't torture and kill, lethal injection does the trick.

Because we have this thing called the Constitution, which prohibits "cruel and unusual" punishment for crimes. Otherwise we'd be back in the "eye for an eye" days of potentially unequal punishment, and people who could afford it might get off scott-free.
