Amniocentesis is very dangerous, there is a risk that your baby could develop an infection, and could die in utero. Are you having an amnio because you think you might have a baby with down syndrome? or is your baby predisposed to a genetic condition. Weigh the cost and the benefit... knowing whether your baby has down syndrome, or not having a baby at all. There are simple blood tests that you can take that can determine the chance that your baby has DS. And if your baby does have DS, what good will knowing do, are you planning on keeping the pregnancy either way? A baby is precious thing and I would only have an amnio if it was strongly recommended by my OB. I don't know if it is painful or not, but would assume that it is.

It's not painful at all, it feels like any other needle the Dr. has used during any blood work drawing. Plan not to go into work the day that the amnio is scheduled, you will have to take it very easy and just lay down. You should get the results about 2 weeks after.
As to whether you should have it or not, my thought was that having and raising a child is already difficult enough, if you are going to have a child with down syndrome, you should plan accordingly. (What ever your decision is!)
These are some pages I checked out before I had to go get mines done. The following article should definitely help: To Test or Not to Test?

You don't feel a thing. I declined a amnio...I ws 35 for my first baby. I found out from my Dr that there is a 1 in 200 chance of miscarriage from an amnio. They do it at 5 months, and its too late to abort anyways. I went with the old addage that I get what I'm dealt with.

I've had it done on my second baby.. the needle looks more scary than it is... it feels like a small pinch... it's not bad at all... take it from me I've been through it and it's not too bad, just a lil pinch feeling. You'll want to not lift anything for 48 hours afterwards either. I was a nervous wreck going into it cos I HATE needles, but we had to get it done and it wasn't so bad... if I ever had to do it again, I would.

I've understood that it is fairly risky. I would probably ask the doctor what type of conclusions are to be drawn from the procedure. If it is just to determine whether or not the "fetus" has any health abnormalities which might "help" you choose to follow through with the pregnancy. I would ask yourself if the information it provides is worth the risks.

My wife is a first time mum of 48 and she didn't feel a thing according to what she told me when she had it done.
Be careful there are risks with amnio. Including pre-mature birth and infection but they are very very low risks. 25 years ago they were higher. Now they are not so high
