Because the republicans are in power right now and they favor wars with other countries above taking care of the country's own citizens.

"Why can't it subsidize health insurance for US citizens?"

Because wars, though expensive, are affordable. The US government DOES NOT have the money to provide health insurance for its citizens.

Medicare, alone, in only 40 years, has racked up a net unfunded debt (that's the dollar value of promises it can't pay for with money in the bank) of about $60 trillion (which is 60 thousand billion dollars).

Medicare is a $60 trillion white elephant in a $10 trillion economy. We must sunset it and close the program between now the middle of this century. We can't afford it. period. Simple bookkeeping demands we end it.

And now you want to EXPAND government expenditures to every citizen? "We can't afford it." I estimate that would cost about $150 trillion. So where is the money going to come from? In an ecnomy that has $10 trillion changing hands every year?!

War is the ultimate health insurance. Look at the war now. By going after terrorists our chances of getting blown up like the 2,000 innocent people in the trade center is much less. Therefore, we stay healthy. Being blown up, shot, be-headed, etc. by some nut case terrorist is not healthy, so Bush has provided us all with the ultimate health insurance.

Because it would take money out of the pocket of the private healthcare industry. The U.S. is the only industrialized nation that doesn't have a "Single Healthcare Provider System". As a result we have the highest healthcare cost of all of the industrialized countries.

I absolutely can't stand that kind of liberal spin... First EVERY AMERICAN IS INSURED...BY MEDICARE... THAT'S WHAT YOU PAY IN TAXES... sure its not the best and you have to be poor but it is better then nothing... Now is there better insurance, yes, but that is capitalism... If they want better insurance...GET A BETTER JOB...
The money we are spending on wars is to give people the right to ask stupid questions and not be killed for it... were not quite there yet, but its coming along

Because healthcare needed exceeds the gross national product and rather than ration rationally and take the heat it is easier to let the market decide who lives or lives well or does not.
