I have been on the Pill for about 4 years. I am not sexually active -- I take the Pill for my acne.
I am getting married in October, and do not want children for AT LEAST 5 years... what type of birth control is the best?
I'm afraid that I won't remember to take my pill at the exact same time everyday - and end up pregnant. My friend says that an IUD would be good -- no hormones, can be left in for 5+ years.. but I'm not sure.

What has/hasn't worked for you? What do you suggest?

Hi, I use the NuvaRing. I like it so far.

It's a ring you insert inside yourself and take it out in 3 weeks so you get your period. It is safe for you to have sex during your period. What I like best about the ring is that I don't have to take it everyday. It shortened my period from 7 days to 4. It has the lowest hormones, of any birth control method besides the pill. It's not expensive, with my insurance I only pay 15$$, (but your doctor will have free samples.Ask for them)
My boobs have gotten a little bigger and I have not gained any weight from the ring. I didn't get crazy, but I did get a little more emotional than usual.

Hi - ER nurse here..

I became pregnant twice because I work all different shifts and didn't take the pill at the same time every day. Then I switched to the patch, but that gave me high blood pressure after about a year. I now use NuvaRing. I thought it would be small enough to sit behind my cervix and no one would be the wiser..wrong, it's big, so big that it is folded in half and then inserted. The good news is it stays in for 3 wks, out for one, then replaced. You are usually done bleeding by the time you need to insert a new one (not as messy), and no one (even my husband) knows its there during intercourse. If you place it far enough back, you totally forget its there, but it's still working. In my opinion all birth control devices come with some risk, however I have been seeing more and more IUD's either becoming infected, or falling out and the women do not even know it.

Whatever you do, don't use Depo Provera! I used it and gained 30 pounds! I've lost most of the weight now because I'm on the patch. It's fantastic, except it gives you 60% more hormones than the pill, so it's not good for a long period of time, like five years. An IUD isn't great for women who haven't had children yet, because it can slip out. It can also cause extensive breakthrough bleeding. I haven't tried the NuvaRing, but I've heard wonderful things about it. It may be a good option for you.
