I believe the last sighting was in the late 70's.
So it's possible. But lack of sightings is not proof that they are yet extinct.

According to David Quammen, the Tasmanian tiger is a misnomer and was actually a wolfish marsupial. The closest real tiger is in Bali, but the tiger or marsupial or whatever is definately extinct.

it is only one of many Australian mammals to have become extinct following European settlement of the continent, it is the largest and by far the most famous.
