It is better if you just use the 512 chip. Or the two 256 chips. If you use all the three the 512 will be used as if it is only a 256 chip.

Ok, first of all, not all motherboards only have 2 or 3 memory slots. I have seen some with 8. As for the RAM, the size of the module doesn't matter, and the 512MB chip will never be treated as a 256MB chip. The only thing that matters is that you make sure that all of the modules you have are the same speed (for example PC3200 or PC2100). If they are, then you have no problem, use them all if you have enough slots. However, if they are different speeds, that can cause some problems. Sometime, depending on the motherboard, the system will have a lot of trouble booting. Best case scenario, the faster modules will be read at the slowest module's speed.

Most motherboards only allow 2 sticks of RAM. So its usually best to go with 2 512 Sticks of RAM. But if your motherboard has the irregular 3 slot for RAM then thats crazy.

It all depends on the PC/laptop you have. There are so many different types of RAM out there that unless you know what you're doing, you could end up wasting your money on something that is not compatible.

Check with the retailer before you go and buy RAM.

Incidentally, if your PC has four slots for RAM and they are not paired, then yes you can - again, I'd suggest checking with the retailer before making a purchase of this kind.

it depends on what your computer ram maxium amount is aloud most computers now a days can handle up to 1mg of ram as long as you don't go over that witch 512 and 256 does not then they will both fit in your computer that is is you can use up to 1mg of ram

Yes why not...... there's no harm..... But precaution has to be taken different RAMs should be of same speed and if possible of same company. As far as Slot are concerned, generally there are 2 slots only but some companies do provide 3 slots(rare).

Again, that will depend on your motherboard. Whenever I pick a motherboard, I buy one that has four slots. If you have four slots, yes, but the memory must be the same type and same speed. Also, it is better to put matched pairs of memory in your system for optimum performance.

If you really want to, you can. In my old computer I had 2 (256) and 1 (128), so it should be alright depending on your cpu and if your motherboard will support it.

There are many motherboards with 3 memory slots. As long as the memory modules are the same speed, you should be OK.
