For the record, i have friends of all races. whether as close friends or people i just met and know are cool. Am I racist for telling a racist joke. I tell a joke about black people to my black friends, they laugh. I tell a mexican joke to my mexican friends, they laugh. Asains, and even my tidey whiteys. Once i told this racial joke to my friend however, and an eavsdropper (of the particular race in the joke) got all pissy about it, saying im racist. that's hate speech. that i should watch my mouth. my friend i was telling it too (who was also of the same race) thought it was pretty funny. i don't care what you people personally think of me, so just give it to me as truthfully as you want. i'm curious about the hypersensitivity of racial jokes. is it real? is it rightfully there?

Well my friend, you have a winner there. The racism is not in the joke. Afterall, a joke is merely letters strung together in sequences that make them intelligable as words, that are in turn assigned meanings and importance by both the speaker and listener.
The joke isn't the problem, the racism is usually in the intent of the teller or perceived as intent by the listener. So basically, what makes a joke racist is in the intent the teller or the listener, or both.
Now we could go on for hours in the debate about overt, covert, direct, indirect and double standard racism, but I doubt that is what you were interested in.
Just be sure of who your around when you tell jokes and you should be OK.

We all must have the ability to laugh at each other and especially ourselves. It becomes offensive when its delivered in a bad or negative context. Black American comedians (for one) poke fun at themselves (and all others) and its a very funny thing. Why? Because it is exactly that, fun. Mostly a take on reality and the diversity of the world we live in. I poke fun at the Irish, but do we really think Irish people are stupid, of course not. Its humor, and it will always sit on the razors edge, some will think hahahahaha and others not. But if we all just stop and think, 'hey its only a joke' and realize its all in good fun and not choose to take offense, then the world would be a happier place.

Most of the racial jokes were made up by people of that race. (not all of them though)
On BET, they'd have black people make fun of white people all the time.. and it was funny.. but now days if you're in the wrong part of town, or around some people that can't take a joke, it can get you killed, or beaten. Most of the racial jokes i've heard though were by people of that race. So I really dont find it wrong to tell them.

I love good jokes about white people and Americans; I'm both of them!
People ought to be secure enough to laugh at racial/ethnic jokes. There are all kinds of comedians of all races who tell and act out racial jokes. I love a good racial joke. Unfortunately, not all people of all races see things the same way.
So, although I know a lot of racial/ethnic jokes, I hesitate to tell them in mixed company unless I know everyone around me well.

in 1200 AD, the Irish invented the Bagpipe. In 1201 AD they gave the Bagpipe to the Scots. The Scots haven't caught on yet.
I'm Scotch-Irish, which means I'm all for getting drunk, so long as I don't have to pay for it.
Humor is humor. The intent behind an ethnic joke is the important thing. I'm gay too, so I really have to learn to take a joke.

The person who corrected had every right to do so!
If you have an understanding with your ethnic friends to share these jokes, that is your business. However when others are present and can hear you, then it becomes their business too. You cannot expect everyone to think your racial jokes are funny.

The idea is to not spread them around as will happen if they're funny. Someone not as cool as you may tell it down the line a bit. Best out of circulation

Anyone that can't take a joke should find a cave and stay in it until they're ready to be part of the real world.
