Sorry ScoobyDrew but you're wrong. The epic was Sophocles "Antigone", not Homer's "The Odyessey"

Man, or mankind. A man crawls when he is a baby, (2 arms + 2 legs = 4)
A man walks on 2 legs through most of his life.
A man needs the help of a cane to walk when he's older. ( 2 legs + 1 cane = 3 )

The obvious answer is “Man” or the over the Humans, however this question speak more to the whole of the human race. At our infancy we crawled out of the shadows of evolutions. We had to crawl just to survive. Learning what would and would not kill us. As the human race become more adapted to its surroundings it began to walk on two feet. At this time we learned of art, philosophy, education, we gained our humanity. Now we walk on three legs nearing the extinction of our existence. Technology has become our cane. We have lost our humanity for a chip and a bit. Is it to late? Can we grow our humanity through technology? Well I don’t have the answers for those questions on the hope we can and survive another few thousand years.

In Homer's ancient epic The Odyssey, it takes the warrior Odysseus ten years to get home after the Trojan War. During this long journey, he is asked to solve the riddle of the Sphinx: "What is born with four legs, lives on two, and dies with three?" "Man," he replied correctly.
"A baby crawls on four legs, we walk most of our life on two, and use a cane in our old age."
Is this correct?

This is an old riddle, one that was said to be asked by the Sphynx if I remember correctly. The answer is "man." As in humans - though I believe the correct wording of the riddle is "What has four legs in the morning, two in the afternoon, and three in the evening?"

Wouldn't it be a person? A baby crawls on four, an older peron walks on two feet, and an older person uses a cane, hence the three.

My best guess would be a "human". For the simple fact that we crawl as babies. Once taught, we walk in two legs. And at old age we need assistance from a cane. This would be my best guess.
