It's not a monster. There's a little interdimentional portal that opens up in everyone's dryer when it's on--I think it's the combination of high heat, static electricity and fabric softener that does it--that only lets through socks. It's a one-way Terminator style portal, so things go in, but they can't come out. I plan to do an in-depth study of this phenomena, but I'll need about 50 million dollars (American) to get started. Anyone want to donate?

There's a gorgeous ad in South Africa that shows a sock sneeking out of the bedroom, hitching to the harbour, stowing away on a tanker and later washing up on a beach. He crawls over a rock and finds this sock party with a dj and a bonfire. Very cute, and an interesting theory. The ad's for a vehicle tracker - either Netstar or Tracker, if you want to look for it online.

I have done quite a study on that, it seems to be, not a sock monster, but the dryer. I have been able to find all the socks in the washer, but never the dryer.
So, in conclusion, dryers eat socks.

No, but he seems to be alive and well. Every time I put away a 'lost sock' waiting for its mate to return, nothing happens. As soon as I throw the lost sock out, as a lost cause, the other one shows up. How do they get such an exquisite sense of timing?

Tiny bits like socks can get flushed out of the wasing macine when it drains. It happens pretty rarely, but I believe that is where the socks dissappear to.

I used to have socks that had little pieces of Velcro on them so you could stick them together in the wash and not lose them. It thwarted the sock monster, but it was incredibly geeky. ;)

It's a tiny goblin that gets everywhere.... and it's not just socks he steals! Keys, earrings... You name it and he'll hide it... and once you have replacements the naughty goblin brings back the stolen goods to annoy you even more!
