Well, the important safety signs are based on shape and color (a stop sign is always a big red octagon), as are traffic lights. As far as the other road signs... no skin off my back if they get lost, so long as they yeild at the upside down triangle.

Very badly, my husband is a truck driver. He said a Trooper told him that in New Jersey alone, 8% of all driving fatalities are from immigrant drivers that can't read the road signs. This in my opinion is ridiculous. When my grandparents came over here from Italy, they couldn't take the test in Italian, they had to learn the English language. I think all immigrants should have to, and after one year if you can't speak and read basic English, you don't get to stay. It angers me that I as a natural born american can't read the sign in a public area because they are written in arabic and spanish. I shouldn't have to learn their language, they should learn ours! I feel like the immigrant in my own country!

My husband just took the driving test after passing the written one in Spanish. The candidate must be able to understand basic instructions in English such as "turn right" or "slow down" or any other command they might be given during the driving exam. Also, they must understand what the different road signs mean. These are the minimal requirements here in the Southwest where we live.

Good question. The fact is they can't. I don't understand why the US won't make English the official language. We spend so many millions of dollars re-writing things in other languages for people that are to lazy to learn the language. The real answer is the politicians are to afraid to do anything because they will lose votes
