One suggestion is to visit the Staple Center's personnel office and ask for the person in charge of event planning (or visit the local arena where events are held). You'll probably have to make an appointment. This appointment would be in the form of an informational interview where you could ask 6-7 questions on their position. I'm guessing they might hold a degree in marketing or something similar. Also check the local college web site and see if they offer a marketing degree. Also ask about internships available in event planning. The events I've attended (i.e., job fairs) were staffed by interns from the local college/university.

Hospitality/Event Planning - go to the best school you can and be sure that the professors on staff actually have practical experience. Many professors only know what they have read.

While education is important to be successful in this career...its even more important to get the work experience in ALL areas of the industry. Not just to get the valuable experience, but to make the connections.
