Well, how do you define the good of the country? Who gets to decide?
Seriously. That's why we have two different political parties in this country. The Republicans have traditionally believed that big government is a boat anchor on the economy and the individual economic rights of its citizens. The Democrats have traditionally believed that big government is a good thing, providing a mechanism for poorer people to climb up from poverty.
On foreign policy, the Republican Party believes it is far better to eliminate threats on foreign soil. And if a threat is urgent enough, then the niceties of diplomacy have to go out the window. Meanwhile, the Democrats are far more reticent to act in this manner, and tend to prefer coalition building.
In any given situation one approach may prove more effective than the other. However, neither party has the monopoly on truth.

When did they ever? A great book to read is the Freshmen. It is about 1st time Senators/Reps who learn immediately that the two party system is nothing but a mechanism to polarize the masses into a "good vs evil" mentality which will ensure that we only have two choices and vote for the lesser of two evils. Even those with the best intentions learn to "play ball" or they become outcasts, even in their own party. Why do you think eveyone was so afraid of Ross Perot?

Because politicians have their own agenda. Especially because they are tied to the people that helped them to get where they are. Unfortunatelly, it isn't about the people but mostly about themselves and their "friends".
