Check out the MIT mystery hunt from previous years.
odd items like a "left foot sock" (it will either need the impression of a foot left in it or have to be a toe sock or similar to establish that it is left foot only)
things they have to look up to define, like grommets.
things they have to make, like short films
information from sources which aren't online

Here is one that worked well for me when I was in school.
Make the scavenger hunt equal to a homework assignment he has in class. For example, if he is asked to do a map showing what products are manufactured and where in a particular country. Have him wonder the neighborhood looking for the items to go on the map.
Please don't do the snipe hunts or have him looking for left handed smoke benders, or things of that nature. They are demeaning and stupid.
For reference, Snipe do exist. They are also called Woodcock and are a bird that inhabits the New England States and Pennsylvania and Ohio.

The last scavenger hunt I went on was in 1994 ... one of the objects was a statue, we managed to get a statue off of a local college campus, and were WAY too close to getting arrested.

we used to have scavenger hunts when i was in high school...some of the items we always had were: a spork (mix between a spoon and fork), hula hoop, a program from a broadway musical, picture of a stop sign that doesn't end in 5 or 0(they do exist), a high school diploma of a graduate from like 1990, a piture of your hunters with a local school mascot

You can make a historical scavenger hunt, one where they have to go to antique shops /junk shops and find articles that we still use today, except that they're looking for their ancient brother/sister. eg. the popcorn popper, etc. It should be fun.
