Because they are Ponzi schemes. Only those at the top of the pyramid make any money. People lower on the ladder have to convince their families and (soon to be former) friends to join. Eventually, it all falls apart.

Also, network marketing adds no value to the product. Why should I pay a bunch of middlemen if I can get a product more directly (and less expensively?)

It's usually a scheme of some sort and most of them want $$$$ from you. I paid $10 to get a "package" of information that would make me rich in just 30 days. The so called package / dvd just went on and on about how great "it" was. Then I called the mentor and he gave me no info but sure wanted some money!

See the question a few minutes ago that the stay-at-home mom asked about home-based businesses (many of them at least) seeming "fake." Generally speaking, I seriously doubt the truthfulness of anybody that is trying to sell me anything. Marketing seems to be the only profession (and I use the term loosely) where we think it is "cute" to lie to people. Oh, wait a minute, I forgot to mention attorneys..........

some of them are pyramid schemes where only those at the top get rich
