It's not the best place. It's not 24/7 like most data centers would be and also how would the tapes be getting there? There are services that will pick up and deliver tapes on a daily basis and store the tapes at their offsite location. That way your tapes are driving around in a truck most of the day (still not the safest way). I think if you have 2 locations you should have a tape library at each location that are backing up data from the other site so that you have access 24/7 and the tapes are always offsite but never being driven around in a truck all day.

They generally are a good place to store off-site backups. You should have the most recent backup set stored somewhere where you can get access to them 24/7 however since banks are not open off-hours. Ask the bank what the fire rating of their vault is; it's important that the interior temperature be kept below 125 degrees F and that water from sprinklers or fire fighting will not enter the boxes.
If you store them in a safe, make sure that it is rated for storage of magnetic media. The fire resistant safes you normally see at Office Max, etc. are intended for paper documents. In a typical fire, the internal temperature can exceed 300 degrees F. That's OK for paper, but backup tapes will be ruined at that temperature.
For magnetic media, you want a safe with a UL Class 125 3-hour rating at 1700 degrees F. This means that exposure to a 1700 degree F fire for 3 hours will keep the interior temperature below 125 degrees F. They also must protect against water entry.
Be prepared for sticker shock. These safes are expensive, typically starting at around $1,000.00 for one that will store about 20 DAT tapes or 5 LTO tapes.

You mean a safe deposit box at a bank? They're probably the best place if you want to spend money.

Ask yourself if they are for archive purposes or for restoration. If they are for restoration and you need them at 2am on aSaturday, it is not a good idea. Find an offsite place and put them in a safe
