Sadism and masochism, often going together (one person obtaining sadistic pleasure by inflicting pain or suffering on another person who thereby obtains masochistic pleasure), are collectively known as S&M or sadomasochism.

Sadism is the sexual pleasure or gratification in the infliction of pain and suffering upon another person. The word is derived from the name of the Marquis de Sade, a prolific French philosopher-writer of sadistic novels.

The counterpart of sadism is masochism, the sexual pleasure or gratification of having pain or suffering inflicted upon the self, often consisting of sexual fantasies or urges for being beaten, humiliated, bound, tortured, or otherwise made to suffer, either as an enhancement to or a substitute for sexual pleasure. The name is derived from the name of the 19th century author Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, known for his novel Venus in Furs that dealt with highly masochistic themes.

The other answers pretty much tied up the loose ends (no pun intended). Couple of interesting points:

1. There are many Sado-masochists...you're either one or the other . The term has kind of been used to lump both sides of the spectrum into one group.

2. Both sides of the relationship are about control. In many S&M relationships, the pain is really an afterthought to the giving and taking of control. Many times female dominatrix's best clients are very powerful men who need to give up control in some facet of their lives. They are letting someone else do all the "work" of control. One can imagine how liberating it would be to have all of ones decisions made for you: no responsibility, no blame.

Watch the movie The Secretary. Great story and an interesting look at the fetish.

I feel it takes a very small minded person to assume that any woman in a successful or power position has to be a lesbian or a sado-masochist. When you are really sick, do you really feel like your female doctor gets a sado-masochisitic thrill out of treating your illness. Not a very realistic view on life.....

Sado-Masochism is a combination word from Sadism meaning "taking pleasure from inflicting pain and suffering on another being". Masochism is similar but is focused on the one who enjoys bringing pain to himself. The former focuses on giving pain, the latter means receiving pain from anyone even oneself because it gives pleasure. Sado-Masochism is commonly referred to as S and M. The pleasure from the pain is sexual in nature, and is a perverted way to relate either to yourself or to another person.
