Where I live there are tons of guys (usually younger to middle aged white men) with a landscaping/mowing business. Some of them have jobs and do the yard work on the side, while others do it full time. These are some of the same guys who plow snow for profit in the winter. I have noticed that, in general, their customers are older people, at least in my neighborhood.

Both of my grandmothers raised gardens and beautiful flowers. I can even remember my great-grandmother's wonderful flower garden. My parents have a yard that is over three acres, not including pastures, and they do all of the work themselves. My husband and I also take care of our own yard.

I can't imagine throwing away money to have someone do our yard, as long as we are physically able to maintian it.

I also agree w/aaron M. I live in Michigan and theres all kinds of white people doing gardening work. Haven't seen any mexicans doing any. My yard is always under construction, mowing, planting gardens, flower beds, trees, pulling weeds, etc... But, my husband and I also have native american ancestry, so maybe, thats what causes us to do our own garden work. Huh???

Is all in the culture, Mexicans comes basically from an agricultural background and is the prime source of income in this third world country.
It is natural for Mexican to be in this type of income generating work and mostly bread winning environment in Mexico.

As for Americans, an income generating work in gardening is not desired in the US. The chooses of profession/trade are many for Americans and interest is not necessary into gardening.

I live in SoCal and do my own gardening and so do the majority of my neighbors! Like other businesses, landscaping and yard maintenance used to be done by Americans, but most taxpaying Americans cannot afford to live on $8-10 per hour in this economy, have health care and raise children.

You must live in California, Arizona or Texas. Mexicans do not do gardening work anywhere else in the country.

Why would you bother doing it yourself when you can 'hire' someone to do the work for you.. and for considerably less than your own time is worth.
Even with professional lanscapers, it boils down to cheap labor.
The less they have to distribute, the less they charge you.
Same goes for house cleaning work. The majority of housekeepers are of latin decent. It certainly doesn't require a degree so it's easy for them to find such employment. Hopefully it's just a stepping stone so that it opens the door so that their descendents may have a better education and opportunity

Because it is easy for Americans to go to the store with a pocket full of money and buy what we need. In Mexico, most people are what Americans would consider poor and they grow their own food instead of buying it at the store.

Because Americans are lazy. I had an American dude do my gardening once, and he was pathetic. I swore to myself never to hire a white man again for labor intensive jobs that is.
