Some turtles will have algae growing on the shell. You can take a toothbrush and brush it off. The algae does not harm them, it is just unsightly. The brushing will not hurt the turtle at all.

Cheers

Your turtle as a 4 year old, probably gained his moss quite naturally, so why would you like to get rid of it? Unless for easthetic reasons, you might as well leave well alone! The moss cannot harm the turtle and in fact acts as an insulating material on the turle's shell. If you do want to remove it, simply scrub it off with a gentle brush and some clean luke warm water (no detergents!!!)

First get an old toothbrush. Then fill the sink or bath tub with warm water. Place the turtle in the sink or bath tub. Now start scrubbing the shell of the turtle. DO NOT USE SOAP!!!

Paint thinner!

no no no dont' do that, that was a joke. if your turtle was in the wild, he'd have that moss on him. make sure you've got clean water and food for him.

I use a SOFT toothbrush to scrape the algae off my guy's shell. This is what the vet said to do but never use anything harder than a soft bristled toothbrush or you can damage the shell.

Just be careful because mine hates it when I do this so he tries to bite the end of the brush :)
