Medicine men (and women, for that matter) have almost always been shamen. One of the requirements of a medicine man is to read the spirits and signs to give a forecast of the future. It depends on how the readings are interpreted by both medicine man and client. What a medicine man sees might not be what the client sees. If the visions are correct, then the medicine man is a shaman. If it doesn't...well, medicine men who make bad visions rarely get the chance to make amends.

in my culture, a medicine man or woman IS the shaman...they not only can cure the ills of the people, they can bring on the rain, call the spirits and talk to them, divine what is to come in the future and what some people consider magick are not, they are normal everyday occurances for the shaman

i think it depends on the culture. i don't. to me a shaman is much more then a healer, he is also a philosopher, a psychiatrist, a liaison with the spirit world, etc. but like i said, the shamanic tradition is so ubiquitous, it is hard to define.

I always thought of them as a doctor or nurse-like person who will help you when you get sick. they know about old time medicines and cures. I don't think they use magic exactly...they just have learned about sickness and cures.
