I think we have to give some details when we give some answers Here are some details for my answer.
Advantages of AVG
1) Low Ram [ memory consumption ]
2) Free Version [ But still you wont get the professional features which is really needed to blast latest viruses.
3) Compressed file scanning Feature [ It will scan zip files and popular compression file types to detect the embedded viruses.
Disadvantages:
1) As i said some of the essential features are put up in professional edition which will be available only when you buy
2) No Support thro online in full pledged mode
NORTON
1) IF you really have a power system with Adequate amount of ram and processing speed
BETTER GO TO NORTON THAN FOR ANY OTHER THING EVEN IF IT COSTS YOU
2) Excellent scanning mechanism
3) Background scanning
4) UPTO date antivirus definition files and support
5) easy to use interface and many things
ONLY THING THAT YOU NEED TO DECIDE WHEN YOU GO FOR ANY ANTIVIRUS IS DECIDE HOW MUCH RESOURCES WILL IT EAT WHEN IT RUNS BACKGROUND
THATS IT

AVG Free is the best and most updated (2 hour average for definitions on new viruses as opposed to Norton which took 26 hours!)

Go to grisoft.com and download the free version of AVG. You have to look for it because they would like for you to buy the pay version. I have had this antivirus for years and it caught several problems that came thru email. Friends with Norton and others went down, AVG has always come thru for me.
PS: Update it every day and do not put more than one antivirus on your system, they will conflict

I think Norton is the best. After Norton, I would say McAfee. You can find Norton free online. just google Norton 2006 torrent. and don't forget to download Bitcomet as a download manager.

I use Trend Micro PC-cillin. It got stuff and protects me from stuff that McAfee and Norton missed.

Avast is free for home users, and quite potent in its ability to protect your system. http://www.avast.com/
I have been using it personally and professionally for years.
The best "tool" against viruses/spyware however is user education.
