Never used AOL's so I can't compare. However I always have thought that their dial-up software is crap. Every time a user installs it on their system it breaks things.
For spyware protection I like Windows Defender. The firewall that comes with Windows XP in combination with a hardware firewall should be fine for most users. I've been using Grisoft's free virus scanner and it seems to be fine.

if you have a spyware problem, then you definetely need some professional help, fortunately companies like microsoft and symantec are aiding for free all computer users, since this spyware problem is actually doing so much harm to their business that most large companies like ibm and microsoft are teaming up to try to eradicate this problem.

2. Mc Affee (Decent reputation Decent budget too)
3. Norton (Best support and most widely used)
4. Free ones (Find plenty of them at www.download.com but be careful before insalling them... the relatively lesser known ones might be spywares themselves)

yeah i used to work for AOL we hardly ever updated its libary of spyware..
i have the following installed my pc
f-secure
adaware SE
windows defender
spybot
System Mech pro 6 (which is not free). which fixes anything else.

There is no such thing as FREE. There is an adware program that is free. Ad-Ware SE from Lavasoft. You can download it from the internet.
There is Spybot. You have to search to find the one that is free.
