Maybe they are diabetic? Maybe they like the taste opposed to regular coke? Maybe they justify eating a greasy burger by thinking a diet drink will even it out? Maybe they did not know you were concerned with being their health consultant?

It has NOTHING to do with saving or cutting back on calories. It's just a preference of TASTE when it comes to soft drinks. I used to ONLY drink regualar sodas but switched to diet years ago because I knew that I was getting way to many calories from the sugary ones. Since then I've just preferred diet to regular and order diet no matter HOW many calories I consume in food.
It's just what some folks LIKE.
It does seem FUNNY though when you order a ton of unhealthy food, full of fat and calories then add, "Diet coke please". :o)

Most people use diet drinks for medical reasons such as diabetics. The burger may raise there glucose level but drinking a diet soft drink to wash it down will not add to the problem.

Some people prefere the diet drinks to the sugary ones. I don't understand it. Yuk. Plus maybe they are diabetic and although they shouldn't have the burger because of it, they can justify the burger with the diet drink.

They don't want extra calories but they want a big mac!
Not ordering regular cola adds about 200-300 calories!

Didn't you know? By drinking a Diet soda, it will cancel out the calories of the grease burger, then it will be even.

they settle with the diet drink to show themselves that they are at least trying to lose some weight. The carbonation in the drink is worse on your kidneys than whatever calories it might, or might not, have.

Because they are diabetic? Could be. Or they don't want to waste 200 to 300 calories on a drink. They are spending their calories wisely.

Maybe... they know that they are having a ton of calories when they order their burger, but they still want soda, so they figure they are having less calories when they order a diet soda...
Yeah.
