Charlie has been a second stringer behind Ben and Tommy Maddox for nearly four years for the Steelers. Charlie has practiced with team, run the drills and the plays but started in limited play. in Detroit, he was highly regarded and had a bright future. Is Charlie a diamond in the rough?

No, I don't believe so. Charlie Batch had potential for a long time, but he never hit it, even with different coaches and systems. While Ben is an OK QB with a great team around him, he is never the reason the Steelers lose. However, with Batch, I can see times where Batch can cause a loss with an ill timed turn over or not being able to run out the clock effectively.

I am a Lions fan, so unfortunately I have first hand knowledge on Charlie Batch and the answer is an emphatic NO WAY!!!
1st off, it is so hard for a team to repeat because of high expectations, Super Bowl lull after the win, and everyone is gunning for them. Yes, NE went back-to-back, but after their 1st SB win against the Rams, they didnt even make it back to the playoffs. I believe it's the past 5 or 6 Super Bowl losers haven't even made it back to the playoffs the following year, so that just shows how hard it is to repeat the success of the previous season.
Also, The Bus was the spiritual leader of that team. The Steelers were so focused on getting Jerome a win in his hometown, that they came out much looser then the Seahawks.

btw, it wasnt a Harley, it was a Haibusa, the fastest, street-legal produced crotch rocket on the roads.

I think ben should be fine by the start of the regular season. If he isn't, Batch is a capable back-up. However, I doubt that he will be asked to lead the team back to the superbowl. His job would merely be to hold down the fort until Ben is ready. Batch could probably compete for a starting job elsewhere but he chooses to stay with the Steelers as aback-up, we are lucky to have him. Good back-up QB's are hard to find.

With Coach Bill Cowher in charge I think you would be able to replace Big Ben in that offensive scheme. The diamond in the rough is not so much Big Ben but the offensive coordindator and Coach Cowher. Look at the offensive statistics for the offense during Ben's rookie year and compare that to the rest of the league. When you got a rushing game - you could have a very potent offense. Kyle Orton did the same thing last year for the Bears.

Charlie can play quarterback in that offense. Anyone could. Ben is not an amazing quarterback he is just surrounded by amazing players such as Alan Fanca, Hines Ward, and Dan Kreider. He also has the Steel Curtain backing him up. I think Omar Jacobs could even take over this team and have a good year.

GO STEELERS!
WIN ONE FOR THE OTHER HAND NOW!

Batch replaced Big Ben for atleast 1 game last season and he was horrible. There is no way he would lead the Steelers to the Superbowl this year.

Word has it that Rothlisberger will be out aprox.7-8 weeks, so he should be back in time for training camp. The Steelers will probably look into aquiring a QB via free agency while Big Ben is recovering. And no doubt there are plenty of QB's out there that the Steelers can choose from. (Kerry Collins, Maddox, Jay Fiedler, Ty Detmer, Jeff Blake).

Without Rothlisesburgerhopenturger....... They need to worry about being over .500 then the Superbowl (they lost 4 starters from there d The bus is gone no more trick plays Randel El left)...... prediction steelers will finish 3rd in the north. just above the Ravens. Cinnci first and do i dare say Browns 2nd. Watch out for there D its gonna surprise a lot of people.

What?!? Big Ben is not out as of right now...I believe Big Ben will be back for the start of the season...and if he's not...I think they will go out and look for a back up QB...not that I think Charlie Batch is a bad QB...it's just he's not a Super Bowl QB like Big Ben!!

My prays and well wishes are with you Big Ben...Get Well Soon!!

it was a selfish move on Ben's part. I don't think he realizes how much we (his fans rely on him) I think he will be back by the 3 or 4 game at the very latest. Advantages of being young. Charlie B can ball he will surprise us all but he is no Ben. Steelers have proved something they are survivers. It's going to be a tough road but thats Pittsburgh's style.
