I'm in my mid 30's. I have an Associates degree in General Business. I'm an Administrative Assistant. I want more though but I'm not sure which direction to go.

This is a tough question, because it takes us to be honest with ourselves. A career change can be scary and not always financially a step up. If I were you, I would start to look at the the popular jobs sites and career sites, and look at every single job. This would give you an idea of the type of job hunting market you are heading into. Also this will give you insight into what employers are looking for, so if you need more education or training you can do so before trying and not being prepared. By looking at every job(even those not in your field or of interests to you) you will also discover careers that you never though about or even knew existed. Then take stock in your current job, ask yourself what are the things you dislike about your job, an those you really like. Figure out what you enjoy doing, eve if it seems silly, and then research this field. For example, my friend was a lawyer and was miserable and hated life. She loved to do makeup and was very interested in skincare. She went and obtained her skin care licenses and now works as a store manager of a Sephora. She makes about $55,000 per year and as she says "gets to paint on people's faces all day". So I guess I'm just trying to say is research, prepare, execute, and finally be happy. Good luck and I wish you well.

If you are in your mid 30's and you are still at a level of a secretary-yeah that is what you are regardless of the fancy words around it, you pretty much don't really have a choice for much more. You should have thought about it in your teenage, early twenties when you would have enough time to finish school and start working on your career. Now you simply will not have enough time to finish school and build a career before you are "expired goods" Because sadly or not businesses will not hire forty some years old without any or little experience in the field.

You need to go back to college and get you B.A. in Business and try specializing in something. I also suggest looking through the current job listing in the company you work for and see what qualification are needed to do that job. You may not want to go back to school but it the best thing you can do. It hard to get a job without a college degree. I bet if you went to night school at any college you will find more adults than kids because they all realized they needed that paper if they want to move up in the world. Good luck

It's all well and good for them to tell you to do what you like and what makes you happy.

Unfortunately, reality sometimes intrudes. Depending on your situation, you may not be able to go back to school or to switch jobs and lose seniority and/or benefits and perhaps take a wage cut as well.

If you're content with your job and don't absolutely hate what you do or despise going in to work everyday stick with it until something strikes your fancy and find fulfillment outside of work. That's what I say.

You need to select something you like. However, the most important thing is choosing a field that creates a lot of jobs. Sometimes people study something they like and end up unemployed.
