He should have worn a helmet. The problem wasn't with riding the motorcycle; tons of people do it every day without getting hurt. Ben specifically said that he didn't believe in wearing helmets; it was his freedom. This was even though his coach and other people tried to convince him that a helmet made things safer. It's his fault that he's injured, and if he can't play next season, he should apologize to all of Pittsburgh.
