I have a new butterfly house, but the butterflies don't seem to care. I'm not sure where to put it (sun or shade). Also is there something you can put in it to attact them and not bees, etc?

Butterflies are attracted to the nectar of flowers, not the house. Plant an abundance of flowers butterflies love and you'll be in business. Here's a link to a fantastic nursery that specializes in butterfly & hummingbird garden plants.

There are certain plants that attract butterflies more than others. A few examples are: lilac bushes, weigela bushes, buddleia ( commonly called "butterfly bush" ). Annual flowers include zinnia, petunia, and lantana, and perennial flowers such as echinaceae purpurea ( purple cone flower) and verbena. If you were to plant all these in a group, you would have a butterfly festival, and might need to purchase a few more houses! There is a dwarf lilac called "Miss Kim" that grows to only 4 or 5 ft that seems to be a favorite for them. Sorry, bees like nectar too, not much you can do to control that. All these plants love plenty of sun

Butterflies need flowers, as everyone else has stated. But they also need water, shallow saucers on the ground will work. If you want them to stay and breed, you will want to plant certain types of plants that the caterpillars can feed on and not your flowers. Certain breeds eat different plants. Since I don't know what kind of butterflies inhabit your area, you'll have to check. Good luck.

I live near a zoo and have visited the greenhouse where they exhibit butterflies and have noticed that they have dishes set out on pillar stands with a half a banana, cut long ways, and several cuts into fruit.
