When you look out at your yard in the morning, do you see very small piles of dirt everywhere? Worms come out at night in search of food and water. Food can be anything from a fallen leaf to a piece of paper. They especially love water, that's why they come up to the surface after you hose the lawn. If you want worms for fishing, water the lawn in the evening. You'll have more than enough worms in no time.

They sure will! My husband waits until dark and the shines the flashlight in the garden and they are everywhere! It is actually kind of gross if you ask me but our neighbor uses them for fishing. It is also good to get them out of your yard because they can make your lawn bumpy.
I am not sure about the clay in your yard but as long as it isn't 100% clay you should see some night crawlers!

WHEN I WAS A KID MY DAD WOULD TAKE ME TO THE WOODS AND WE WOULD "FIDDLE" FOR NIGHT CRAWLERS.
IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS HERE'S THE DETAILS. GO INTO A COOL SHADY PART OF THE WOODS DURING THE DAY, CUT A SMALL TREE INTO ABOUT WAST HIGH. THIS TREE SHOULD BE APPROXIMATELY ONE INCH IN DIAMETER.
NOW TAKE AN OLD HAND SAW AND START SAWING DOWN THE CENTER OF THE TREE. DON'T HOLD THE TREE AS YOU SAW DOWN THE CENTER. THE VIBRATION OF THE ROOTS WILL MAKE THE NIGHT CRAWLERS COME UP ALL AROUND. NOT JUST AT THE BASE OF THE TREE. ONE OTHER THING YOU SHOULD BE AWARE OF SNAKES WILL ALSO COME OUT.
BE CAREFUL AND CATCH A LOT OF FISH. THE CATFISH LOVE THEM.

clay is very hard for them, but I have seen them come out through clay. so it is very possible to get some by 2 in the morning if you water the yard for at least 1 hour at around 10 to 10:30pm.

Yes, the nightcrawlers will come up to avoid drowning. Have you ever noticed that after it rains hard there are tons of worms on the surface?

Yes. Find a spot that already has night crawlers. They usually inhabit shady spots under some kind of cover, like leaves or straw. I don't think watering your lawn will bring them out. They really like dense groundcover.
