They were the maenads, wild women who worshipped Bacchus(the god of wine) through drunken orgies, animal sacrifice, cannibalism and all that fun stuff. Orpheus came across them when they were feeling particularly randy one day, but he was still bummed out over his wife's death. He didn't want anything to do with them, so they got all pissy and tore him apart. His head stayed alive--because those sorts of things happen a lot in greek myths--and became something of an oracle.

When Orpheus came back from the land of the dead, and had failed to get his wife, He went into a deep depression and started banging his harp with a rock which let out an awful sound and he wouldn't stop. So, all the women in the town got fed up with it and killed him.

Orpheus, in his state of mourning for Eurydice, created such a terrible sound that it literally made women barren. They killed him to stop the noise.
