To maximize momentum while minimizing effort running down hills, you need to lift your knees and do your best to stay off your heels. Everytime your heel hits while you are running, you stop momentum, putting excess stress on your knees. Also, try not to lean back as this also puts stress on your knees. Of course, stay in control, crashing down a hill is just as bad in running as it is in other sports.
