Put a smile on and go out. People are always attracted to smiles and if they are approaching you then you do not have to approach them.
Also remember always treat others how you want to be treated.

Join an active on-line community on something of interest to you. ie, I am a member of a stepmom support group and have been for almost 2 years. I'm online everyday reading about the daily lives of others and getting to know these women. I also find it easier to post and open up about myself.

You'll be surprised how many people relate to your situations and respect your views. This is a great way for a shy person to get used to socializing and it will transfer to off-line relationships as well!

Here's are a couple of great links with lots of resources!

when u go to a karate school for the first time, do u fight with the sensei? I don't think so... step by step, try starting conversations with relatives who u haven talked to before, or try talking a bit more to clerks, who incidentally are paid to talk to u, about weather current events u know while the check prices or something, then move along further into the chain.

immagine you dont have anything , like hypnotise yourself into believing that , and that you must get everything you need from other people somehow.
i think being shy comes from inflated ego, the sooner you realise what you are and could be to others it becomes easier to interact with them.

I just walk up and start talking to folks. I'm used to be real shy until I started dancing and bartending and being naked in front of lots of people makes it so much easier to talk, lol.

Ask them lots of questions. You see? It is already working. Good job! People will remember you by your questions. Not a bad way to be remembered.

go to the dog park (if you have a dog)... dogs totally help start up conversations. if no dog, go to church or to the store... you'll see tons of people there. just smile and someone and say good morning or whatever. you're bound to start up a conversation eventually (and it'll help you get over the shy-ness).

In a chatroom.
But someone who is really shy should seek therapy, ideally.

Talk about something that you are good at that you feel they may be in to. Be humble and enthusiastic so you won't sound conceited. Be yourself- we all have something to offer.
