Goverments should do it. They are set by the people to take care of the people? Unless of course you live in America.

If it were left to business there would be no retirement or security program.
I think it should be left to individuals. But, then companies would need to pay more so that people can have a nest egg. Rather than allowing the money that a company places into SS, and company retirement plans, the money should go to the individual salaries. Then the Gov. can give tax incentives so that people would be encouraged to place money into their own retirement plan. This is by far a better approach than the SS system, which gives loads of money to people who NEVER worked, and people who worked but paid little or no taxes.

President Roosevelt did what the preamble to the constitution proclaims and I am 100 % sure that what he did was right then and will always be right. We have government to protect us even from ourselves. What has happened through the years is that the government has borrowed from the kitty and has not paid it back. It is estimated that the government owes a trillion dollars to the fund. We would not be hearing the dooms day predictions. Unfortunately for the working class the present republican government wants to rid itself of the responsibility to the people. They want to see their supporting high rolling corporations become the guardians of our life-savings. I don't think that would be a wise move on our part as citizens. What we need is to make sure that the funds are distributed right and fairly only to those who have really participated and contributed to it and make sure that the policies that protect the money in the fund are enhanced so that no one but the beneficiaries can make use of it.

Governments should offer it as, if left up to businesses, there would be very little or nothing at all as it affects the "bottom line". Individuals have little incentive to save for the future as well. Just check out history - especially of the USA pre-Social Security. Old people were expected to be cared for by their families - now we dump them into extended care centers and nursing homes.
