chords, specifically G, C, and D. You can play a lot of songs with those 3 chords. Learn other chords (Am, and Em are some good ones) work on your strumming patterns. Next in barre chords, finger picking and reading tabulature. Check out guitarnoise.com for some good basic lessons and tips.

as with anything you do, practice, practice, practice, and when your done practicing, practice some more.
take some good quality lessons from a professional, practice, and then forget what (s)he showed you and just play how you feel.
oh, did I forget to mention, that you need to practice?
