A pre-natal vitamin won't hurt, but in general, a women's multi-vitamin (like One-A-Day, etc.) is sufficient.

It never hurts to be taking a pre-natal even before you get pregnant -- however it is a multi with the required folic acid.
Taking a vitamin is not the only thing you should do. Make sure you are living a healthy lifestyle -- don't smoke, or drink alcohol. Live your life now for the health of your potential child--anthing you put into your body could have a positive or a negative affect depending on your own personal choices.
Go and see your OB/GYN for a pre-pregnancy check up -- they will give you vitamins or a prescription.
Buy a pregnancy week by week book - some have pre-pregnancy advice. One by a Dr. Sears (I think that is his name) is a really good one.
Exercise and keep a routine you can do throughout your pregnanacy. Some weight gain is normal but it will help you more in the end to give birth and to regain your body after if you are fit now and throughout.
Eat healthy and avoid caffeine if you can. A moderate amount is ok like no more than 12oz of soda per day but if you can stop all together it is better.
I have two beautiful children, both are very smart and healthy, but with one I was better at doing the things I suggest and their temperments are night and day. Of course this is just my own theory, but I really wonder if the choices I made during my pregnancy affected the outcome and I feel really guilty that I did not have the same commitment to both pregnancies. I never smoked or drank alcohol but I did not eat good, drank caffeine and I took an anti depressant throughout my pregnancy for good reason but I still think I should have had better self control for the sake of my unborn child.
Bottom line -- just be healthy in your actions, relax and enjoy the process and see your Dr. now.
Good Luck -- children are a blessing.

Prenatal vitamins are similar to regular ones in many ways, but they have a higher concentration of certain vitamins and minerals. Take the prenatal vitamins because they have more folic acid and iron. Also, Mead Johnson makes a supplement, Expecta, that I took in addition to the prenatal vitamins. It is a DHA supplement. DHA aids in brain and eye development. Most American women don't get enough of it in their diet.

When pregnant, one of the most important aspects of a vitamin is the amount of Folic Acid in it. 800-1000 mcg of Folic Acid is ideal to promote healthy brain development in a growing fetus. In Pre-natal vitamins, a level of at least 800 mcg built into each vitamin. So, it is best to take a pre-natal labeled vitamin, which they do sell without the need of a prescription.

No, just make sure you're getting the RDA of Folic Acid. If you're unsure how much to take, call your doc.
