I don't get it. We have to strap in toddlers and babies like their racing at the Indy 500, but motorcyclists don't have to wear helmets, jeans or even appropriate footwear. This blows me away ie Ben Rothliesberger, Kellen Winslow Jr, and what's his name that was supposed to play for the Bulls.

Someone said it was NOT against the law not to wear a helmet. In actuality that is not always the case in all places. For instance I live in the tristate area of WV, PA and OH while in WV you are required by law to wear a helmet, in PA and OH you can go without if you meet certain criteria by law.

The links below list the law by state and the exceptions to the law.

According to whohelmets.org, "requiring helmet wearing - by law - is an effective strategy to increase helmet use and to reduce death and injury. Laws requiring motorcycle helmet use increase helmet wearing to 99 percent" This is definately more than enough to encourage me to always wear my helmet.

I ask this same question all of the time and I wish I knew the answer. I think it's ridiculous b/c if a car hits a motorcyclist and kills him b/c he's not wearing a helmet, they get charged with vehicular manslaughter, even if the motorcyclist pulled out in front of them. even if they don't get charged, they have to live the rest of their life knowing that they killed someone that would otherwise be alive if they had been wearing a damn helmet.

I ride a motorcycle and I believe that only an idiot would NOT wear one. Every ride I take is a gamble because motorists dont usually watch for bikes....My guess about rothliesberger is that he doesnt value his life enough to make a decision like that...he needs a law to do it for him....

In New Zealand they have to, I guess its different rules for different countries. I think in American they have powerful lobby groups that say it doesn't protect you neck when you go forward in a collision, it snaps your neck.
