The first, William Hartnell.
He portrayed Doctor Who as dark and mysterious, intelligent and alien. A man who had live many years, old and feeble yet he could be strong and active. He made intelligence cool. We all want a grandfather like him.
The later actors portrayed him as a comic book hero or a clown.
Don't forget the original series was a thought provoking sci-fi drama, and not intended as the campy pantomime it became.
Most people will probably choose Tom Baker, not because he was the best but the most remembered.
But I also think David Tennent and Christopher Eccleston are very good.

I didn't actually watch any of the Doctor Whos' before the series with Christopher Eccleston in it but he was definitely my favourite - he had a very serious attitude but was also quite amusing.

The new guy is good but as a preivous 'answerer' has said he appears more like a comic.

Does anyone else think he also has a striking resemblance to Richard Hammond (off Top Gear and the 5 o'clock Show)?

Of all of them, I find myself between four Doctors:

1) Peter Davison
2) Paul McGann
3) David Tennant
4) Hugh Grant

Jon Pertwee. When he took on the role, it became a more action-packed series. Prior to this OB were out of the question due to budgetary constraints consequently, the plots were somehow "smaller". It was during this period that Dr Who really took off. Also, he was Worzel Gummige so that's got to make him a winner!

Tom Baker by a mile. It's a long time ago now but even without seeing him when you hear his voice, it's so distinctive compared to the rest, you know it's THE doctor. He was very clever, very eccentric, very tongue in cheek and the best one ever.

I actually like the current one (mental block on the name at the moment) best, for the simple reason that he's got good comic timing and is quite attractive! I expect I will be lynched by the purists but there it is!

Christopher Eccleston was also good, if somewhat nuts.
