A counselor should do just that, "counsel". I believe that a counselor should help students make the right decisions regarding furthering their education. Like helping getting students internships or more information on careers so they can make educated decisions on which career field is most appropriate for them, which colleges to apply to depending on what career the child is interested in entering, and things like that. They should also just be there to help students when they need help the most.

A high school counselor helps the student and his or her parents schedule the courses that will help the student to get into a 4 year college or to go on to a trade school or further vocational training. The counselor also is involved in looking for signs of learning difficulties and may also counsel a student when he or she is having emotional difficulties in school or at home. They also look for signs of child abuse and report those to the proper authorities.

School counselor: To help you make it through school by assisting in organizing your classes, watching for signs of a learning disability, and being there to talk to. The good ones will also have readily available college information and be willing to do a little extra work to help you achieve.
Other: To help you, mentally and emotionally. They are there to talk to.
