Why ~wouldn't~ they?

If I say, "I am going to the store to buy apples," that is first person.

If I say, "Mary said there is a sale on apples at the store," that is third person, and a perfectly reasonable way to speak.

Speaking in third person also disassociates the individual from the object of topic. For instance, did you ever see the movie "Silence of the Lambs"? Remeber when the creepy transvestite guy has the kidnapped girl in the well in his basement? He says "It puts the lotion on it's skin" when he's telling the girl to put the lotion on that he sends down to her in the basket? The writer purposely has this psychopathic character speak this way to show how dispassionate he is toward his victim-how he looks at her as a thing, rather than a human being.

Usually when a person talks in third person a lot of the time they think they are all that. This people are total jerks and don't deserve your time. If someone just busts it out once, they may be trying to be a little humorous.

The third person is "He, she, or it." If a person is talking about him/herself as "He or she" then they may have an ego problem, or they could be trying to describe a situation from someone else's perspective. We usually tell stories in the "third person," so someone might want to create a colorful account of an event by making it seem like a story.

I believe that most people who speak of themselves in the third person are usually some type of celebrity. By referring to themselves in the third person, they are usually talking about their public persona. When they use I, my, me they are talking about the "real" person.

People talks about themselves in third person because of two reasons. 1) They have superiority complex and would want to hear other people say exctly like how they talk about themselves. 2) They are insecure about themselves and would like to detatch themselves from the situation and treat themselves as third person with whom they have no emotional attachments.
