Placid and insouciant? On the whole I think we are, yes. I believe this has come about from centuries of invading different countries and being invaded ourselves. We've undertaken numerous crusades, followed a variety of religeons over time and are now a truly mixed race society where social and class barriers are blurred.

Of course there are exceptions to every rule, but if people think of Latino people being hot blooded / tempered then I think we in Great Britain are quite the opposite.

Now if you don't mind I shall return to my cucumber sandwiches, tea and listening to the Archers old chap.

I can't wait to hear what people think of the words "placid" and "insouciant"...I bet few even know what these words mean.

But, seriously, can anyone person classify an entire nation, particularly as diverse a nation as Great Britain, in such a limiting way? LOL

Well yes in a way we're becoming more and more placid. We no longer demonstrate about much. Students used to demonstrate about stuff all the time and no no-one seems to give a monkey's. Of course it's not true about everyone but look at the way we put up with Blair and all his lies. We're not revolutionary anymore. I think we accept too many things.

Strangely the British tend to have the whole, we ruled the world for hundreds of years so we know we are best attitude. The Scots and Wels and Irish were under tyrannical rule from the english for hunderds of years so they are far from placid. From the worlds super power only one hundred years ago to a piss poor little island we have had to roll with the punches and tend to relax with an affable sense of superiority

I don't know any British people, so I couldn't tell you from any personal experience. But I know that is the way they are often portrayed on movies and on television and their personalities seem like that when interviewed. There was a poll I read on the BBC web site that said most people in England have 'realist' personalities. ???? who knows.

perhaps you should try watching a football crowd. the british are more passionate about their national sport than almost any other people on earth.

(the australians are perhaps even more motivated - but then most australians once came from britain anyway).
