Actually, they do not migrate. In the winter they all check into the local Holiday Inns and spend the cold winter there. Then, when spring comes, they check out and you see them again. People just assume that they flew south because they are not seen during the winter, when all the time they were in the Holiday Inn. (They like the free continental breakfasts there and it sure beats flying all the way down to Florida and back.)

Of course they fly, they haven't got another option buddy.
Sometimes, hummingbirds migrate the lenght of whole countries and oceans to get to more habitable climates and some species even stop in between to collect nectar(kinda refill) before continuing on their flight.

As nector is just something the hummingbirds need to aide their wing activity, it is necessary for them to migrate to central america during the winter when the insects they eat are not abundant in our cold climate. Most hummingbirds are carnivores.
