A light weight bike. A 250 cc dual-purpose (street & trail) is a good place to start. Enough power to go highway speeds, but light enough to get used to maneuvering.

A lot of times it will depend on the persons personal choice. what kind of money they want to put into the bike. what brand of the bike the person wants. It sometimes has to do with how old the person is. Your best bet would go and take a course at the local college on motorcycle riding then they can help you look into what you think you want. That's what I did and I got my license before I got my bike, I'm sorry I can not help you more but if you would like to talk you can send me a email

If your a learner, go with Honda! They have a reliable bike and very nice smooth ride. They also sell them with a smaller cc but still a nice looking bike. Check out the Honda Shadow! Great bike for a learner and Great bike for the money, if you want a sport bike they also have nice learners for those too..

A cheapo $300 one that runs and is not very fast. You will learn about the mechanics of the bike, as well as develop the basic skills necessary for safe riding without having the potential power to scrape yourself all over the freeway as easily. My roomate just got his girlfriend a beater honda for $300 and she will learn on it, and then sell if for $500 or more since they are fixing it up as well.

I would have to say it depends on how long you want ot keep it. strictly a beginner bike - Suzuki GS500F or Kawasaki Ninja 250 or 500. For some really good bikes that you could stay happy on - Honda 599, Kawasaki Ninja 650r (I think they call it a ninja, but the inline twin), or the Suzuki SV650.

My husband and i have been researching it and we have been going to look at bikes a lot. we were debating between the honda599 the ninja 500 and we ended up getting a z750s by kawasaki because it was an excellent deal. but we were told that the ninja 500 was an excellent beginners bike.
