Let me illustrate by giving you my nomination: The Beach Boys... They range from 'Be True to Your School' (music excruciating enough to make you long for a quick and painless death) to 'God Only Knows' (lovely enough to make the Devil himself cry).

Tough to believe that they were both actually made by the same group... Which other group or artist ranges so widely from terrible to terrific?

Just 'cause it's my question I can make all the comments I want...

Fall out boy, the Decembrists, A.F.I. I've never heard of.

I think that Bon Jovi's quality control has been remarkably consistent... such that you can't even tell one song from the other (except that 'Johnny used to work on the docks' song... that's art at it's finest!)

Pearl Jam got a few votes... I kinda agree but even their very best isn't that inspiring as I see it.

As for the Beatles, I actually think 'that sitar crap' is amongst the best that George Harrison did, but after 'Living in the Material World' he just became really, really bland... Paul McCartney is a good choice (you do know he co-wrote 'Veronica', don't you?) because he's released great music and toe-curlingly nauseating crap. 'Hello Goodbye' being a classic example of the latter. That song is on heavy rotation in hell, you know.

Metallica's not really my cup of tea, but ı generally agree. Should have retired before they discovered Prada and suing their fans. U2 I quite agree with - their 'irony' era produced one great album (Achtung Baby) but then they got their heads lodged firmy up their own a*ses...

I think Elvis Costello's had an amazingly good batting average over the years. He just had a really fallow patch in the late eighties - but then, so did a lot of people. (Mind you 'Poisoned Rose', 'Shipbuilding' and 'I Want You' are all from the late eighties.)

And, lastly, thou shalt not blaspheme Prince! Everything Prince does is sheer genius by dint of its having been created by Prince. Even Prince's crap is genius! Thus, he gets disqualified from consideration. (okay, you're right, 'You shake your body like a horny pony would' may not be the deepest thing he's ever written...)

probably Elvis Costello, with the beautiful, amazing songs "i want you' and "Allison" (with the best word-playing-joke in a song that i know of "i know you're in love with somebody, i only know it isn't mine")...and then he made "Veronica" (bleah..)

but also Prince, the beauty of "sometimes it snows in april" versus the horror of "alphabet street"

I can't blame Paul Mcartney. After a trazillion beautiful songs, you're allowed one 'ebony and ivory'
I also can't blame The Beatles. After a shipload of beauty, i can't blame them for "hello, hello".

lol, this question really made me look through my music-collection again, that's fun. I saw that almost every band, even how horrible they are, almost ever produce at least one nice song. Even Take That (probably one of the worst bands ever) made "back forgood", which is kinda nice.

A.F.I. was making really bad music before Sing the Sorrow.

Blink 182's old stuff was fantastic for it's time, now that they can't keep a band together, let alone write good music, they suck balls. Think "What's my age again", compared to "Miss You." And they have three bands now: Blink, Boxcar Racer, and now Angels and Airwaves.

Gorillaz has a wide range in music, period. Especially on their first album, they have very few really good songs, which is completly switched around on Demon Days (which I think is one of the most brilliant albums out there) Both albums have a popular song that everyone knows, but the other songs on each album do not resemble that one song.

George Harrison made some of our best music, and some of our most sickening music. Most of his stuff is unlistenable - all that sitar crap. But his contributions such as My Sweet Lord, What is Life, For You Blue, Give Me Peace on Earth, Crackerbox Palace, etc are uplifting and very well produced. I think.

I have to agree with one of the other answers. Pearl Jam is my favorite band as well, but they've got some real crap, such as most of the Riot Act CD. They've got other songs such as "Heyfoxymophandlemomma, that's me," which is ten minutes of boredom. But with songs like "Jeremy" and "Corduroy," and "Nothing as it Seems," they've also got some of the best music ever made.

I'd say U2, one of my favorites when I was a teenager, with the whole War, Under a Blood Red Sky, and Joshua Tree era, and then last summer, f*cking Vertigo! Bleugh!

Metallica.
Some of their stuff makes me say they're my favorite band but other songs make me want to smash the radio.

Even though they are my favorite band, I would have to say Pearl Jam.
