There are many news articles on obesity, yet few on the number of Americans who are malnourished or food insufficient. America's food bank networks have difficulty obtaining sufficient food and cash donations or volunteers to help everyone in need. Is this a reflection on the generosity of Americans?

I think it is more a relfection of the economic disparity. Just because there is plenty does not mean it is distributed equitably.

Tax cuts give 78 billion dollars to fewer than 20 families in the US -- not 20%, 20 families. Other tax cuts benefit only the upper 15% of American families. The gap between rich and poor continues to grow.

The cheapest foods actually remain those that are grain-based and which are high in carbohydrates. They increase glucose levels in blood, which is stored in the body as fat; glucose alsoe causes the overproduction of insulin, leading to diabetes with its constellation of health problems.

Americans have suffered from "compassion fatigue" from donating to so many worthy causes over the past few decades -- but remain one of the world's leaders in donating to charitable causes. The problem is with the government trying to shift the role to the private sector for the housing and feeding of the poor. Shelters hide the homeless in many cases, but are not an adequate substitute for the government assuming its role in promoting the welfare of all people.

Obesity goes hand in hand with malnourishment. Did you ever wonder why so many poor people are obese? The cheapest foods out there are the ones that are high in fat and calories, and low in nutrition. If food banks want government subsidies, they have to follow nutritional guidelines, and that can make food cost-prohibitive. (school lunch programs face the same dilemma). It's too bad that people still think that obesity comes from lack of self-control, or too much food. It comes from poor nutrition.
