It is my considered opinion that the modern chicken is generally believed to be a descendant of "Archaeopteryx", the oldest known bird. This 150 million year old resident of the Jurassic period laid eggs, and at some point of time, evolved into an animal that was one generation away from being a proper chicken. This creature would have produced the egg out of which the first chicken emerged...the EGG came first.

According to research, it was the egg because genetic material cannot change in a live animal, thus it must have mutated in the egg to produce the first chicken out of that egg. Thus the egg came first.

If you are of the Christian belief, according to the Bible, God made the animals, so therefore, the chicken came first. If you are not, I guess it is up to your own thoughts on the origin of life.
