Racism exist because people don't know the person or group there dealing with. It could be that they see someone and they don't like what they see and they form an opinion about them. or they have dealt with an individual from a group and they didn't like what they saw so they put that face on the whole group. In America Racism began because the south hated the north and when the north freed the slaves in the civil war the south took it out on the African Americans. now people are racist because they were raised that way. When the see a African American they have a preperceved image about them.

Why does racism exist?

Racism exists because the human race in and of itself is destructive. People in general will do whatever it takes to make themselves feel better about theirselves. Also racism exists because old generations keep on preaching the same old rhettoric to their children thus keeping the cycle of hate going. I cant tell you how many times in my personal life i would be over at my grandma's and she would see a black man and pull me away or if i was seen around her talking to a black women she would get onto me. Racism exists because we let that sick cycle continue...We are taught as children that blacks are evil or recently that all Arabs are terrorists.
To stop racism you must first start with yourself. Black Or white, Asian or Arab, it is up to all of us to help end it.

I am not a racist person but also let me add this into the answer. As far as black people go i think you all wont let racism end. Whenever something happens blacks will throw the racism flag quick. So i dont beleive white against black racism will ever end because you as an ethnic group refuse to get over that you were slaves. Following the "black" mindset i should be pissed at the irish cause i was once a slave..so every time something happens i should yell out "I am being prejudiced against"

Anyways my 2 cents on the whole black issue..if you want racism to end then stop SCREAMING racism every time something happens and stop telling your kids to hate someone for their color

I believe hate is part of the human condition. Whether that is a result of nature or nuture I cannot tell you, although I would guess it stems more from nuture. Budhists and others don't hate so it probably has to do with ones upbringing. Unfortunately racism is just one more way for people to seperate themselves from others to feel superior. Whether it is the Japanese culture that looks down on all foreignors including other asian cultures or the black/white conflict we experience here in the US, I think people use racism to elevate themselves in their own mind. Sadly I know educated people that have been around the people they are racist against. I don't think you will ever eliminate racism. The best chance we have is massive intermarriage to blur the lines of race. Even if we can eliminate racism, nationalism, sexism, agism, etc will still exist.

Racism isn't just an American thing, it exists in other countries as well for different reasons. Racism because of skin color or ethnicity is born from pure ignorance in my opinion. There is always going to be some no brain out there thinking they are superior just because they were born of a different color. Everyone is equal in God's eyes and who are these ignorant people to judge anyone anyway?

If you notice, racism has barely anything to do with your level of education. I think that racism is individual, although it's influenced by the way you were brought-up, the people around you and even the place where you live. I don't think racism is because people are ignorant, but because some people are closed-minded and just selfish.

My mother is from the Philippines and I was raised on a bunch of different Air Force Bases around the country. I've grown up with the understanding that there are different people out there and that's OK. That's what makes this Earth beautiful. However there are tons and tons of people who weren't so fortunate to be brought up that way. I think Racism exists because of ignorance. The pure unknowing of another man's culture and background and things that are "different" scare people who don't know any better. And when your scared you rely on your defenses. That something social groups have been struggling with for years. It's going to take a great deal of patience and understanding on our parts to deal with the people who don't have such virtues.

Racism exists not because of upbringing, or because of stupidity, but because of stereotypes. I am a white male that has grown up in the south in a prejudice home, but I am not racist. The stereotypes with black people is that they are all welfare cases to lazy to work. With Arabs it's that they are all terrorists. With Mexicans it is that they are all illegal. There are stereos types and racism in every ethnic group, but since the majority ethnic group is the white males, how they stereotype determines how they think. They are convinced that their stereo type is the way things are, and they don't like the way they think things are, or the people that make it that way, so they discriminate.

Because of something called "ethnocentrism," which is basically the idea that "We're better than them."

It makes sense that we would have developed that way, doesn't it? Two small tribes fighting over a water buffalo for survival would obviously have to decide who got to eat and who didn't. So if one tribe wore green, and the other orange, the greenies would naturally try to get the food to the ones who would be around next month to help them fight off the marauding bluies from two valleys down.

So, give them a few millennia and it's ingrained in the cultures, heck, probably in the genes through the process of natural selection. Voila, today's racism.

Though we have a long, long way to go to overcome these ingrained behaviors, I think we can do it. And I think we're beginning to, and forums like these are as good a place as any to try. One day we'll all figure out that those two small tribes all had the same great-great-grandparents, and that it's my own bloodline I'm trying to prove is inferior.

Because it has for centuries due to greed, ignorance and hatred: Kings founded and built their kingdoms on the backs of slaves. (ex. Jews were once slaves). In the 1800's English and Brittishmen used slaves (native Africans) as cargo and workers. In the 1900's Asian americans were segregated and moved to relocation camps during WWII. Native americans were pushed from their homelands for white settlement. Today Hispanics and Latinos from all Latin Americas are stereotyped as "Dirty Mexicans".
We all come from different places and different cultures and until we learn to embrace our differences and love one another for the person inside and not the color of their skin or native origin, then and only then will racism ceist to exist.
My only complaint is that African Americans as a majority stop pulling the race card...they seem to do it more as a group than any other race. And Hispanics and Latinos that want American citizenship here in America should learn english and take the tests and necessary footsteps to become legal American citizens. If a large group of Americans were to work illegally in France or some other country and demand citizenship because we're simply there, they'd deport our asses faster than we could say, "But I was here first!"

Racism will always exist, no matter what race you are. I don't believe in racism, but not everyone can feel the same way. I am a person that looks within no matter what color you are, it's whats in a person's heart that truly makes a difference, no matter if your black/white/caucasian/chinese/japanese, you are a wonderful person if you show respect to this world and others living in it.
