If it says that it is compatible with Windows 98/2000/XP then is. If it says Windows 95/98, I'd be concerned. Some Winodws, no... make that most Windows 95/98 programs ONLY will not work under XP, sure you may be able to install it but at launch or at some point using the program it will crash. You can try to use compatibility mode. Right click the shortcut once it is installed and go to properties and go to the Compatibility tab. Check the box that says "run in compatibility mode for" and select an operating system from the drop down list. I have yet to find an instance where compatibility mode worked well. Meaning, maybe I could get it to launch but after it was loaded it would crash or run extremely slow, Mechwarrior 3 is a shining example of a program that will not run under Windows XP because it can't identify your graphics driver (ANY modern graphics driver).
All programs that run on Windows 2000 will run on Windows XP because they both are based on the NT code base whereas Windows 95/98/ME were not and some of them, if not most programs written for the 9x series of Winodws will not run under the NT based operating systems (Winodws 2000 and XP).

I would be confident that it'd be compatible up to Windows 2000.
But what the heck... go ahead and try installing it on XP... Keep an eye on the system a while and if you notice anything peculiar go through the Add/Remove programs routine and get rid of it.
There is a compatability option within XP for older programs, but you might check with the manufacturer for an update, if one is available for XP.
