OK I asked this question in the sports section and it didn't get much response, so here goes!

OK in the UK you can own a pump-action shotgun for sporting purposes, as long as it is restricted to only being able to hold two shells plus a chambered shell.

A friend told me (as I am about to start clay pigeon shooting) that buying such a shotgun is actually recommended for beginners as opposed to the traditional over-and-under...what do you think?

I started clay bird and skeet shooting 12 years ago and have competed at a national level. I started using a side by side 12 gauge. I have used other but find a side by side a lot easier to shoot with and still use one. Get yourself a custom made stock with a monte carlo style( raised where you rest your cheek). If you start using a standard stock tape a bit of cardboard to see if monte carlo is your style.

It might be a good idea for you to contact a Clay Pigeon Shooting club and ask for their advice. I have tried Clay Pigeon after rifle and pistol target shooting and really enjoyed it! I hope you enjoy sports shooting and keep at it!

So you hunt? I would say use the gun you are going to use in hunting so you get use to it. Some people say you should use a single shot so you get use to making sure every shot counts. Unless you are shooting trap for a sport to be the best, then only use the best from the start to give yourself the edge

I started on a pump...and yes, I would recommend it over the other type. Trap shooters, in my opinion, will enjoy the quickness of the pump and ease of use.
