Not much is known about the safety of hair dyes in pregnancy. It is likely that when you apply hair dye, a very small amount is absorbed into your body. But it isn't clear how much, if any, of these chemicals may reach the fetus. Talk to your obstetrician about any hair color treatments you may be planning. He or she may advise you to postpone any chemical processes involving your hair until at least after your first trimester.
To minimize the amount of hair dye that may be absorbed through your skin, the Food and Drug Administration offers these recommendations:
Don't leave dye on your hair any longer than needed.
Rinse your scalp thoroughly with water after use of hair dye.
Wear gloves when applying hair dye.

Besides the chemicals in the dye there's also the changed chemistry in your body.
It's not advisable to do any radical hair treatment with chemicals when you're pregnant.
Neither perms nor dye.
Some women have been known to damage their hair in such a manner it never came back right.
I know of 1 woman who's hair never grew longer than 2 inches after her pregnancy.
Pregnancy is like doing the Olympics untrained, and takes a lot from your body and chemicals just increase the workload.
Try a little bit of hair that you can hide to make sure you don't get funny colors.
But it's better to check the healthfoodstores for non chemical dyes.
They fade more easy but don't damage you or your baby.

Honestly, it depends upon the type of hairdye. Dyes containing chemicals and bleaches are a big no-no, although it has been suggested that you can in a big space, there are always risks in doing such as that. There are, however, natural based hair dyes that I've heard are quite safe. But as always, it is best to ask your attending physician/midwife their opinion first to be on the safe side! Hope this helps!

Oh yes, just becareful of the fumes. It's suggested to dye your hair in a very open space, or big room with open windows, like the kitchen or a big spacious bathroom with good ventilation.

yes, they use to say that you couldn't. but now they have proven that it doesn't affect the baby as long as you are in a well ventalated area. i had my hair dyed every 2-3 months during both of my pregnancy's and my children are perfect.

I've heard that you shouldn't....I didn't. Try using henna colors for the duration of your pregnancy....they are natural and the chemicals are not present.
