I am sending my parents for a a week of vacation in Europe. they are flying in UK for couple of days (2 days) and flying out of basel to come back. what can they do in between? where can they stay for a reasonable price? how should they travel from UK to Basel and get the best out of the trip? they have 9 days to spare for the trip it self.

There are 2 routes you can take.

the lower route: take eurostar to Paris, stay there for 3 - 4 nights, and then spend the rest of the time in switzerland. Luzern is great place to explore, also switz alps, take scenic train..

the upper route: eurostar to Brussels for couple of hours, and then go to amsterdam. stay there for 2 days, then go to Germany, including Rhein river, Baden Baden. you can still go to luzern at the end for this route.

train is great way to move around in europe. i would buy a rail pass and have a worry free travel. SelectPass Saver is the way to go.

If they're going all the way to Basel, they should fly onwards to continental Europe.
Or if they're sick of flying (and they might be if they only have a week) they could get the Eurostart train to France, and more trains from there.
It might be nice for them to spend a day or two in Paris on the way.
There are good chain hotels in France that are usually in the outer androissments but on the metro line.

Send them to Flanders in Belgium. There are wonderful art cities to visit. They will be surprised !
Have a look at the website www.visitflanders.com.
From London they can take the Eurostar train to Brussels (3,5 hours). And Brussels is the very center of Europe.

have them jump a cheap flight to Schipol airport in The Netherlands. Stay a day in Amsterdam, grab the train from Amsterdam down to Cologne, Germany, another day there. Grab a boat down the Rhein toward Frankfurt, watch the castles, etc. nice and relaxing. Day or two in Frankfurt. Grab the train again down to Basel.
