What powers the Internet? What keeps "things online" online? If we use conventional floppy disks, USB Flash Drives, CD-R/CD-RWs, etc. to store our personal data, then where is the data in the internet stored? If I download a file or watch a streaming video, where does it come from?

In a nutshell the internet is a massive network of computers with the main players having servers holding stored data. When you download a video from a website it is like retrieving a video from your cd or harddrive except you are downloading it from someone else's cd or harddrive on their server.

Several factors keep "things online" online. The server computer holding stored data, telephone or cable companies, and associated electronic gadgets. The server computer needs to on and connected to the internet, the telephone lines need to be open or cable internet operating, and modems and nodes and all the other gadgets need to be in good working order.

That's it in a nutshell!

Internet is a global network connecting millions of computers. As you have a hard drive which stores your data, Cd's to back up your data the same is done on the other end. As Internet is a network of interconnected computer's there are certain computer's that store the data in them. They are similar to your computer but the only difference is they are lot faster. They also have a hard drive in them. No for example you want to download a file from www.download.com what you do is you type www.download.com in your web browser and you press ENTER, now once that is done the website address is converted into numbers that is the IP address (Internet protocol address). The IP address of www.download.com is located by a computer called as DOMAIN NAME SERVER which has all the info of the IP address of websites. Now once that is done your PC request the info from the computer of www.download.com. Once when you get the info and once when you click on the link to download a file a connection is established between your computer and the computer of www.download.com which is called as a server and the file gets downloaded. Sorry i could not elaborate more as i would then write a big fat book cuz this is all you learn in fat books. Well hope that answers your question.

The internet is really just a bunch of servers all on the network of the internet along with clients like you.
All content on the web (web sites, files, etc.) has a server that sends the data when a browser requests for it. For example, for someone to get a website they need to either set up or a rent a server that will host it.
The internet is just an extremely large network of computers.

When you purchase a domain name and get hosting, you upload your information to a large server owned and operated by the hosting company. It is these servers that contain your streaming videos and music downloads.

For storing' data we have centralized Server (WWW).

there are some computers that are always online - they are called web servers.
then they are backed up or mirrored for an inevitable indivisual server's downtime (when its offline).

so all the info on web that u see on web is usually replicated in 3-4 places simultaneously.
